The White Sedan

I left the restaurant in Lahaina and made the short drive back to Foxx’s house. Two things happened along the way. The first was that I noticed a white sedan pull out of a parking space across the street from where I’d parked my Z3. It made a slow U-turn and followed me down Waine’e Street. I made a quick turn on Kenui Street, and the white car stayed with me. I then made a left turn on Honoapiilani Highway, which would take me to Kaanapali and home.

As before, the white sedan followed me until I made the turn into my neighborhood. I wasn’t one hundred percent sure it was the same white car I’d seen follow me before. There are certainly a million white sedans on the island. Most of them were rentals driven by tourists, which made them perfect vehicles for following someone. If I had to take a guess, I would say it was the same car. As before, I had no idea who it might be or why someone would want to follow me. The one difference this time was that I was able to see the first three letters on the license plate: BFY.

The second thing that happened on my way back was that I received a phone call from Reagan just as I pulled into Foxx’s driveway. She told me that she’d finally gotten some information from the seller’s agent. Apparently, the seller was aware that he had liens on the house. However, he was under the impression they’d been wiped away by the bankruptcy filing. He said he was as shocked as Alana and I were to find out they were still there. I highly doubted that.

His lawyer said he would try to get the liens lifted by the various people and companies that had filed them. If they refused to release the liens, then he would arrange a court date to appear before a bankruptcy judge and ask the judge to lift the liens. The judge would either lift them or he or she would refuse. There was really no way to guarantee one way or the other. Although this phone call provided some news, it certainly didn’t give us any concrete answers, and we were left in a holding pattern.

I spoke with Foxx when I got into the house. He’d just received another phone call from an angry Hani. I wasn’t sure if she’d reached the state of stalker yet. Foxx thought she had. I didn’t think so since his tires hadn’t been slashed, and she hadn’t actually shown up at the house holding a knife and glaring through the back door. I probably shouldn’t be joking about the knife since she’d been accused of doing some nasty stuff with one in the past, but what the hell. I’m just telling you. It’s not like I’m spreading rumors across all of Maui.

A week went by after my lunch conversation with Audrey in Lahaina, and I had made little to no progress on the Lily James investigation.
